FAQs
What do Harvest Events typically look like?
All Harvest Events take place at properties in the San Gabriel Valley. A typical event lasts about two hours: it begins with a 10-minute safety and instructional talk, followed by 90 minutes of fruit picking. We end with around 20 minutes of sorting, organizing the fruit, and cleaning up the site. Volunteers are also encouraged to take frequent breaks to stay cool in the summer heat!
What do I need to bring to a Harvest Event?
Please wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty, closed-toed shoes, a hat, and sunglasses. We’ll provide all tools and equipment needed, as well as snacks, cold water, and sunscreen. Most importantly, bring your energy and enthusiasm!
Will I receive community service credit for volunteering?
Yes! All volunteers are eligible to receive community service hours for participating in Harvest Events. For service hours, we work under the nonprofit Food Forward to officially verify and log your hours. After each event, our team will record your hours and provide documentation upon request. If you need a signature, please present the form to the Event Leader.
Where does all of the fruit go?
After each event, the harvested fruit is delivered directly to local receiving agencies. These include food banks, shelters, and other community organizations that distribute fresh produce to those in need.
Who can volunteer?
Our events are open to all high school students and middle school students age 13+. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to help and a positive attitude. Please keep in mind that volunteers must fill out a waiver form for each event that they sign up for and plan to attend. Parents can join as well, but all volunteers must complete their own waiver form before the event and be willing to get their hands dirty!
How do I sign up for events?
You can be notified early by filling out our volunteer interest form. We will both email an interactive Google calendar of upcoming events in mid-May and post the live Google calendar under the Volunteer tab. After receiving the calendar, check regularly for events on dates convenient for you; the digital waiver form and all relevant information for that event will be attached to that date.
